Holbox

  • Long ago, this island was also called Polbox and Holbox Palomino, which in Mayan means “dark hole,” but today most of its inhabitants call it Isla Tranquila and it is better known as “Isla Tiburoneros”.
  • Originally, Holbox was inhabited by Mayan groups who installed lookout points in front of the sea (dozens of constructed stone towers served as lighthouses) that, like witnesses, remain along the coast.
  • For centuries the region was frequently visited by pirates seeking food, fresh water and obtained shelter in the lagoon.

Their cuisine. With many charming restaurants, Holbox has an interesting array of cuisine, which undoubtedly lobster pizza is a specialty.

Fishing tours.. For visitors, the sport fishing tours ensure unique moments in a spectacular place. In Holbox sport fishing is available at all levels, from mini-fishing to deep sea fishing, amateur or expert. Season: May to October.

Isla Pájaros. Is located inside Yalahau lagoon, about ten minutes by boat from Holbox and is home to over a hundred species of birds, where you can enjoy bird-watching. Some types of birds on the island are in danger of extinction.

Isla Pasión. On your visit to Holbox, you cannot miss the opportunity to visit Isla Pasión, a magical place that inspires quiet reflection, where you can get back to nature and spend a romantic time with your partner, just a few minutes by boat.

Scuba and Snorkel.. The island is the ideal place for scuba diving and snorkeling with its calm and clear waters.

Dolphin sighting. On mornings the dolphins arrive to the calm Yalahau lagoon to feed in its waters, which makes it the ideal place to visit them.

Turtle sighting. During the summer thousands of turtles arrive to Punta Mosquito to spawn. After depositing their eggs, they turn back to the sea leaving their herence.

Cenote Yalahau. Cool freshwater spring that flows within the crystalline salt water, known as the “fountain of youth.” Here you can swim in the morning with the dolphins that come to feed on minnows or see the fl amingos landing near this magical place.
